Overview
Matsushima was the founder of Sanritsu Confectionary Co.
Biography
Since he began his rock candy business in 1913, he was looking for a way to use molasses made in the process of making rock candy. Kompeitō was unpopular because it was too expensive then. Thus, he decided to invent a machine to produce it effectively.
He founded Sanritsu Confectionary Co in 1921 when he succeeded on creating the machine. The company grew rapidly and built a factory in Tokyo in 1931. In contrast to rumors that they would fail, animal shaped biscuits were a great hit.
