Hamamatsu Information Book

Tsukiyama Gozen was the official wife of Tokugawa Ieyasu and mother of his first son, Matsudaira Nobuyasu. She was also called Tsukiyamaden.Her father was a vassal of the Imagawa and her mother was Iamagawa Yoshimoto's sister.

 

She married Ieyasu in 1557. She had her first son, Nobuyasu in 1559. Kamehime, her first daughter, was born next year. In 1562, resulting from Ieyasu's alliance with Oda Nobunaga, the opponent of the Imagawa, the provoked clan made her parents commit suicide. Nobuyasu got married to Nobunaga's eldest daughter, Tokuhime in 1567. Tsukiyama made his son to take a daughter of Asahara Masatoki, a vassal of the Tokugawa, as a concubine since Tokuhime wasn't having any sons.

 

She was killed at Gozendani (Naka-ku) by Nonaka Sangoro and Okamoto Heiuemon with Ieyasu's order. She was buried in the Seiraiin Temple. Her tomb stands next to Hisamatsu Yashutishi's, Ieyasu's step brother.

 

Books written in the Edo period often referrers her as an evil wife who was arrogant about her honorable family, self centered, and jealous. Some sees this was so to justify Ieysu's action.
