Overview
Hattori Kurajirō formed the early eel cultivating system in Maisaka.
 
Biography
Kurajirō, who was researching the eel and softshell turtle aquaculture in Tokyo, knew that Lake Hamana was the best place to cultivate eels when he saw the lake from train. In 1900, he made a 80 km² pond in Fukiage, Maisaka-cho. He devised the system of the eel cultivation, which was undertook by catching wild elvers, young eels grown to about 15 cm, and raise them.
He also started the aquaculture of softshell turtles for the first time in Japan.
