Overview
Muramatsu Keijirō was the researcher of eel aquaculture.
Biography
In the beginning of Showa period, the cultivation of eels was undertaken by raising elvers, young eels grown to about 15 cm. Muramatsu undertook the research to cultivate glass eels (eel fry) in order to increase the productivity.
After many trials and errors of feeding the fry, he succeeded on growing them.
However, half of them would die in winter. In 1971, he made a system to keep the temperature of the pond around 25 degrees Celsius. His works laid the foundation of the development of the industry.
